Link Love

Today, I'm up to my ears in laundry and -- despite mild exhaustion for a late night Chinese take-out, an idea spawned from a teeny bit too much drinking -- I'm hoping to find the motivation to whip the house into shape before the start of a new week.  Based on the state of my energy level and the struggle to keep my eyes open, I might have to settle for just clean sheets and towels, but I'm still aiming high with hopes that maybe (just maybe) I could also get a few other tasks done.  Here's hoping!  And while I'm busy with my housework (read: watching the Real Housewives marathons all night long), here are some links I've happened upon lately that have made me smile:

*An incredible way to pay tribute to a friend.

*Why didn't I know about this sooner?

*A fun, peppy song for warm summer days, like today.

*This bright, vibrant bedding would be the perfect cure for grumpy Mondays :)

*I have to see this documentary, but the next time it is going to be in my area won't be until September, and even then it's about an hour away!  Road trip, anyone?

*And speaking of documentaries, this is on my must-see list, too.

*So serene.

*THIS IS SERIOUSLY THE BEST PROPOSAL EVER.

*For the rugged-man in your life.

*Alex and I lugged five bags of clothes that we either don't like or no longer fit us to Savers on Friday...but our mini closet clean out has nothing on Joslyn.

Cover-to-Cover

Do you have any magazines that you read cover-to-cover every single month, without fail? My one go-to magazine is Real Simple -- the only section I skip is the Table of Contents, and that's because I know I'm going to read it all so I hurry through and get right to it.  Each month when it's delivered, I can't help but to smile as I approach my mailbox with the spine of the magazine peaking out. Glamour, Martha Stewart Living and Whole Living are other must-reads, but Real Simple has always held this weird, special place in my heart and no matter what it's always remained a tired-and-true favorite.  (I even find myself referring to the website throughout the month between issues!:)

What's your favorite magazine? Are you a cyber-only reader, or do you prefer to flip through the glossy pages, old-school style? I'd love to hear your thoughts :)

DIY Cheese

Just spotted this DIY Cheese Kit over at A Cup of Jo.  Would you be daring enough to make your own cheese?  I'd love to try some homemade mozzarella cheese to make a big pan of lasagna or a pizza...yum! All you need is one hour and a gallon of milk, and you'd be ready to impress your friends in no time with your culinary prowess :)

PS: the shop also sells kits to make goat cheese, ricotta, queso blanco, chevre & more!

Weekly Woof

Rilo has not had the best of luck when it comes to health issues in her short little life.  At not even two years old, she's made appearances at the vet more times than any other dog I know.  Mostly, it has had to do with her skin: last year we had to take her to the vet for an ear infection, as well as severe inflammation of her nipples, which has really never returned to normal.  She's constantly scratching and passersby often ask if she just had pups due to the swelling.  After rigorous treatment of many leads that lead nowhere, the vet finally settled on "seasonal allergies," suggested Benadryl and sent us on our way.

Fast forward to this summer.  Rilo's ears have been bothering her and since she's had an ear infection before, I knew the signs to look for.  In addition to the ear infection, she had started to scratch her belly more frequently than usual, we started to notice little red spots all over and some hair loss on her knees.  She began chewing on her paws a lot, and we finally made the call to the vet after she vomited three times in a two day period.

Last night, Rilo met her new vet -- a lovely strawberry-blond who prefers holistic treatment over antibiotics, and even performs acupuncture on some patients!  She agreed that Rilo had an ear infection, and believes that all signs do point to allergies, but as opposed to the seasonal allergies we had thought she suffered from, this doctor believes it's actually a food allergy.  For now, we're tackling her ear infection with twice weekly cleanings, twice daily ointment treatments, and a steroid to help both the ear and the belly for the next week or two.  After her symptoms are at bay, I'm going to slowly switch her diet (something I've long wanted to do, but admittedly decided to put on the back burner until we had the extra money to spend on an all-natural diet, instead of a WalMart diet). Hopefully, after 8-12 weeks, I'll know if the diet switch will be the cure and we can move forward.

SIDENOTE: The doctor also prescribed a special shampoo to use twice a week to help soothe her belly and get rid of the bacteria and yeast that is on the surface of her skin.  What the doctor forgot to say was "DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME" which is exactly what I did last night, leaving my bathroom soaking wet and my walls, sink and bathtub FILLED with little black hairs.  Her next bath will be taking place at the groomers -- an extra expense that proved necessary after the mess we girls made.

Her appointment was last night and already her ears look a million times better, she's not scratching quite as much as before, she's playing with squeeky toys again, and the tail is wagging overtime.

Rilo, if you could read I'd write you a letter explaining all the ways that you make Mommy happy.  I'd tell you that, despite how expensive and annoying you can be, I couldn't have adopted a better, cuter or more lovable dog.  I'd tell you that I love the smell of your fur and will tolerate your stinky dog breath if it means a big, slobbery puppy kiss on a particularly gloomy day.  I'd tell you that I think it's cute when you sleep curled up on my head, despite being 60 lbs -- and even if that means I don't get a pillow to sleep with.  I'd tell you that I love you with all my heart and that I'll never stop loving you.  I'd tell you that you're my very best friend.

...But since you can't read, I'll show you I love you by playing with you when I get home from work, cuddling you, petting you, brushing your fur, rubbing your belly, giving you ice cubes and making sure you get all the attention you deserve :)

Addiction

Let's just be honest with one another: we're all eating too much ice cream this summer, right?  Please tell me I'm not the only one that's been scooping one-too-many helpings of ice cream on a nearly daily basis pretty much since the summer began.  And while we're airing out our dirty laundry here, I have a confession: I may or may not have eaten a bowl of ice cream for lunch yesterday.  What?  Isn't this what summer is all about?

PTK Conference

click to enlarge -- you can't get the full effect without seeing the big picture :)

This weekend I had the privilege of attending a Leadership Conference for PTK Chapter Officers.  The weather was absolutely perfect and the conference wasn't a snooze-fest like I feared it would be.  The photo above is of the campus that it was held at -- Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, ME.  From each classroom, we could see vast expanses of water and during breaks we were able to saunter down to the sandy beach steps outside.  My first instinct was, I have to explore colleges up here! but it was admittedly difficult to concentrate with the beach beckoning right outside the window.

The weekend has left me excited about upcoming conferences, projects and most of all: the Chapter Officer elections slated to take place at the beginning of September.  A fellow conference-goer is interested in either running for President or Vice President of our school's Chapter (Alpha Delta Omicron) and I'm going to run for the other position (I'm already the President of the Sustainability Club, so I don't want to push to take on the role of Chapter President if he wants it).  Middlesex has afforded me with so many opportunities that I never thought possible, and I'm both excited and sad to be embarking on my last year here.

But before we get too carried away about the promises of the upcoming school year, it's time to enjoy what's left of the summer.  With more than half of the summer behind us, we can't waste any time dilly dallying!

Flying Spiders

At the breakfast table this morning, everything was pretty much was as it normally is: the kids squealing, both vying for my attention, yelling for juice, and definitely not using their indoor voices (thank you, coffee, thank you).

Suddenly, a frantic Hannah starts screaming about a flying spider and starts requesting, very loudly through tears, that I KILL THE FLYING SPIDER because it's COMING TO GET ME, and to PLEASE HELP.  When I glance over to where she's pointing to, I don't see any spider whatsoever, flying or otherwise.  Her mom, equally unriveted by Hannah's early morning theatrics (a typical start to the morning, right up there with taking vitamins and peeing), ignores her pleas.

Panicked, Hannah realizes no one is coming to her defense of the FLYING SPIDERS THAT ARE COMING TO EAT HER, and breaks down into heaving sobs.  With her Mom now in the other room, I double check the scene: nope, still no spiders, but this isn't the same sort of fake crying and whining and storytelling that comes with the job of being Kerri Poppins.  She's legitimately upset and nearly inconsolable.

Bending down to her eye level to scoop her up and reassure her that there are NO flying spiders coming to eat her and that the only thing that is going to be eaten is her cereal, I finally spot the itsy bitsy spider that Hannah has been so petrified of.  Evidently, she had walked through its web, so no matter where she went, this little spider followed her, remaining at eye level, suspended in air as if to be flying.

A paper towel solved our morning meltdown, and she (luckily) got a pretty big kick out of it.  It really was an exceptional illustration of The Boy Who Cries Wolf fable.  Not to mention to cutest thing I have ever seen in my entire life.

Double Vision

Is it just me, or am I seeing double?  Seriously people: these two films have the same exact plot line!  Not to mention the 6-degrees-of-Kevin-Bacon action that's taking place: That 70s Show, Black Swan, No Strings Attached!

Thoughts?  Are you interested in seeing Friends with Benefits?  Did you see No Strings Attached?  Out of curiosity (and admittedly an attractive cast in both films), I'm thinking of watching them both back-to-back to see just how close they compare.  Girlie drinks and popcorn, included.

I'm Still Here

Last night, Alex and I made the wise (yet somewhat difficult) choice of staying in, cooking dinner at home (burritos), pouring ourselves some drinks (margaritas + beer) and watching a movie, as opposed to our usual routine of making sure we get to have one night out a week.  To pinch pennies, we gave the at-home date night a go and ended up having an equally fabulous time.  The movie of choice was a rental we picked up at the library*: I'm Still Here featuring Joaquin Phoenix's ultra public meltdown in 2008. It was like a train wreck to watch: difficult at times, but impossible to turn away.  Honestly, I'm still having trouble processing it.
Have you seen it?  What did you think?  When we watched it last night, we still didn't know if it was real or not and only this morning did I investigate and discover the answer but I'm glad that we went into watching it without having looked for answers first because I think we were able to watch it the way the director (Casey Affleck) had intended for it to be viewed.

*Who needs Netflix when you have a library in each and every town? I mean, seriously!  The last few movies Alex and I have sat down and enjoyed together were either free or $1 rentals from the library not even a mile down the road.  Can't beat that....

Fireworks

Last weekend, my friend Nate and I saw fireworks on Saturday, Sunday and Monday in three different local towns.  I love hearing the reactions of little kids (some are scared, some are elated), but the best aspect of fireworks is watching a whole community come together with smiles, laughter and general summer cheer.  With each burst of color in the sky, I'm instantly shot back to my childhood and relish in feeling like a carefree kid again, if only for that small pocket of time.
(All photos compliments of Nate!)

Summer Fun

Today the temperature hit 90° so the kids changed into swimsuits and we headed to the backyard to set up the sprinkler!  Unfortunately, I didn't have my swimsuit with me, but how could I not run around barefoot, giggling and splashing around with my two favorite preschoolers?  I might be "really old" (their words, NOT mine) but that doesn't mean I can't have fun and find some relief from the heat, too!  I got soaking wet from head-to-toe in my clothes, but it was so hot and sunny that I was completely dry within an hour.
You only get to BE a kid once, but you can ACT like a kid forever, can't you?

Happy 4th of July

Wishing you a happy and relaxing Independence Day! Today is about all of those simple summer pleasures: playing with sparklers, picnics on the beach, laughing with friends, the scent of sunscreen mixing with the salty ocean breeze, swimming until your fingers and toes look like raisins and watching fireworks with the awe of a child.

Perspective

It really is just a matter of perspective, isn't it?  I'm forever drawn to editorial cartoons because it really seems that with just a smidge of humor, the truth becomes crystal clear.

PS: Don't you love NPR's Double Take, featuring "two views on the same news"?  If you haven't checked it out, do yourself a favor and check it out -- you won't be disappointed!

Swimwear

Feel free to buy me one, or all, of these chic swimsuits. In exchange, I will make some yummy sandwiches, pack my cooler and we can spend the day at the beach.
